NEW DELHI: The city witnessed dense fog on Monday morning with visibility dropping to 50m due to calm winds and high moisture even as cold-day conditions continued for the second day in the national capital as the mercury dropped further.The maximum temperature at the city’s base station Safdarjung was recorded at 15.6 degrees Celsius, six notches below the normal, and the season’s lowest so far. The maximum temperature a day earlier was recorded at 16.2 degrees Celsius. The maximum temperature was 11 degrees Celsius at Jafarpur, making it the lowest maximum for isolated parts of the city, followed by 11.4 degrees Celsius at Mungeshpur and 12.6 degrees Celsius at Palam. At Safdarjung, season’s lowest temp at 5 degrees CelsiusCold-day conditions continued for the second day in the national capital on Monday. The minimum temperature at the city’s base station was recorded at 5 degrees Celsius, three degrees below normal and the lowest for the season, against 5.3 degrees Celsius a day earlier. According to the IMD, isolated areas of the city will suffer cold-day or cold-wave conditions till December 28.Meanwhile, dense to very dense fog is expected in Delhi along with neighbouring Haryana and Punjab for the next 48 hours. “Dense to very dense fog very likely in isolated pockets over northwest Rajasthan and dense fog in isolated pockets over Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi till December 27,” IMD stated.The visibility on Monday at 5.30am was 50 metres against 400 metres on Sunday. This led to delay in schedule of 10 trains. Around 30-40 flights were also affected at IGI airport, officials at the airport stated. Meanwhile, Ayanagar recorded 4.0 degrees Celsius and Ridge recorded 4.1 degrees Celsius which though despite being low did not qualify for cold wave. A day is considered “cold-day” if the minimum temperature is below10 degrees Celsius and the maximum temperature is at least 4.5 degrees C below normal. While the “cold-wave” condition prevails when either the minimum temperature slips below 4 degrees Celsius or its below 4.5 degrees C the season’s normal. According to the IMD, the maximum and minimum temperature on Tuesday are likely to hover around 17 and 6 degrees Celsius, respectively.Meanwhile, the air quality saw slight deterioration. The AQI on a scale of 0 to 500 was 338 at 7pm on Monday, against 308 a day earlier.
