Police recovered over 2,000 rounds of ammunition, including imported cartridges, and arrested six men in connection with the case. Police said the accused were identified as ammunition couriers Ajmal (20) and Rashid (20), receiver Saddam, gun-house owner Parikshit Negi (42), and two others, Kamran and Nasir, who supplied cartridges to Negi.
Police said initial evidence indicated the involvement of criminal elements, while the terror angle had not been ruled out.
Police said on August 6, they had spotted two men near Anand Vihar ISBT with a trolley bag while on patrol duty, who changed direction and began moving briskly on seeing them. Vikramjit Singh, Additional CP (Eastern Range), said: “We had earlier got a tip-off from an auto driver on the 6th regarding two men with a heavy bag.” The two accused, Ajmal and Rashid, were intercepted by police and 2,251 live cartridges of various types, including heavy calibre, were recovered from them.
Police said the two confessed to allegedly taking the ammunition from Dehradun to a person in Lucknow and claimed they had supplied a similar consignment four or five times in the past.
A police team then raided places in Lucknow and Jaunpur and arrested Saddam from Suetha Kalan village in Jaunpur. Another team went to Dehradun to find the source of the ammunition.
Priyanka Kashyap, DCP (East), said: “CCTV cameras were scanned at the location where the consignment was exchanged. Parikshit Negi, a gun-house owner, was identified and arrested. He confessed to obtaining ammunition from other gun houses and sources and supplied ammunition to the other accused after manipulating the records of his gun-house.”
Police said potential involvement of other gun-houses was being ascertained via an examination of Negi’s records.
They added that Kamran and Nasir were later arrested from Dehradun and Roorkee. Police said efforts were on to arrest the main receiver of the ammunition and expose the supply chain. Police said there was involvement of an incarcerated criminal in Meerut, who had assisted the accused in finding a supplier for ammunition.
