NEW DELHI: The Centre late on Thursday issued a notification regarding reservation of municipal reserved seats/wards after Delhi State Election Commission (DSEC) submitted the details to Union home minister Amit Shah. Eleven district election officers were also appointed for the 250 wards. “Considering there are 250 municipal wards now and those reserved for scheduled caste are 42, we have selected wards with the maximum SC population in descending order and reserved them. Wards of odd numbers will be meant for women and even numbers for men. Of the remaining 208 wards, odd numbers will be for women and rest earmarked for men,” said an official. The Centre in a notification on Wednesday had directed to use electoral rolls till January 1 as the “qualifying date” for the municipal elections. In Delhi, 1,48,99,159 voters are enrolled in the electoral lists. Last month, MHA issued an order stating, “In pursuance of the provisions of subsection (5) of Section 3 of DMC Act, 1957, the central government hereby determines the total number of seats of councillors in MCD as 250. Further, in pursuance of the provisions of subsection (6), the Centre also determines the total number of seats of councillors to be reserved for members of Scheduled Caste as 42, based on the ratio to the total number of seats as the SC population to the total population of Delhi (Census 2011). There were 272 wards in the three erstwhile civic bodies. In another order issued by the SEC on October 19, directions were given to the tender committee for taking necessary steps for finalisation of all vendors for ensuring MCD elections and also to complete all codal formalities. “Considering the MCD elections are likely to be conducted shortly, it becomes more pressing to complete the tender process. As such, it is imperative that all vendors for various works are finalised and fully geared up to promptly meet the requirements of the commission for smooth conduct of elections,” stated the order issued by the commission.
