NEW DELHI: The Public Works Department (PWD) has completed the majority of the road work on Ashram Flyover extension. On Friday, workers were busy laying bitumen on the fresh 1.4 km road that connects to DND and other areas. Under the flyover, fresh paver blocks were being laid. While the streetlights on the flyover are yet to be erected, workers were engaged in finishing work on the ramps. Most of the labour and machines were concentrated on the integration work of the extension with the existing flyover. The crash barriers on the flyover are high to prevent vehicles from crashing down on the settlements.Due to the heavy movement of pedestrians in the area, after dismantling a foot overbridge on the Ring Road, the PWD has constructed a humped subway for pedestrians to cross over to Sunlight Colony. The pedestrian underpass near Kilokri intersection under the flyover has also been completed and is functional. Two foot overbridges have also been constructed on Mathura Road over the Ashram underpass. The two ramps for entry and exit from DND have been completed. Another side ramp that will provide an exit towards Sarai Kale Khan has also been done, but work continues on the fourth ramp that provides access from other nearby areas to the elevated corridor. After the completion of the flyover, the PWD will repair the Ring Road under it, which has several potholes and is uneven at many stretches. There is a high flow of traffic from Lajpat Nagar to Sarai Kale Khan-Noida in the evening, while in the morning the traffic is heavy from Noida towards Lajpat Nagar. The capacity of the road is inadequate in this section. The area has several shops and private offices on one side and residential colonies on the other, and this makes the area heavily congested.Started in 2020, the work on the flyover extension was supposed to be completed within a year, but the Covid lockdown and loss of manpower caused delays. Now, only integration work on the flyover is going on.The idea to decongest three main intersections — Maharani Bagh intersection, Ring Road DND road junction, and Ring Road loop towards Sarai Kale Khan — was passed in 2017.
