These monuments include Birji Khan’s Tomb in RK Puram, Baradari Qudsia Bagh, Bara Lao Ka Gumbad at Vasant Udyan, Gol Gumbaz near Lodhi Flyover and Tomb of Paik at Mukarba Chowk. The monuments will remain illuminated till August 18. According to officials, there are 71 monuments in Delhi, which are maintained by the archaeology department of the Delhi government. The department has initially chosen five to illuminate and give them a distinct look under Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav initiative. “In the first phase, we illuminated the five monuments. Since the project has been successful, we will take up other monuments too,” said a Delhi government official. Senior officials said the Delhi government is also planning to hold cultural programmes of light music, ghazal and baithak at some of these monuments. “Much, however, will depend on the weather. Such music programmes cannot be held inside the monuments; it has to be organised in the open during the evening hours. If the weather permits, we will hold a few events,” said an official. Delhi has a large number of historical monuments, many of which are centrally-protected, some under the Delhi government’s jurisdiction and many other sites fall under the ambit of the local civic bodies. Archaeological Survey of India and New Delhi Municipal Council have also illuminated some of the monuments under their jurisdiction. The archaeology department also hoisted national flags at each of the 71 monuments that are with the Delhi government. Basic cleaning and maintenance of these monuments was carried out in the last few days. To create awareness, “prabhat pheris” were held under the “Har Haath Tiranga” campaign at Baradari in Qudsia Garden and Bara Lao Ka Gumbad at Vasant Udhyan jointly with the directorate of education. A large number of students participated in the events. Deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia, who also holds the charge of art, culture and languages department, had earlier said that the Delhi government has taken up the restoration of all monuments in its jurisdiction, which remained neglected for a long time leading to damages to some of the heritage structures. “Delhi is known for its historical monuments all over the world and it is the priority of the Kejriwal government to preserve them for life. To ensure the conservation of all the monuments in jurisdiction of the Delhi government, its concerned departments are working diligently and round the clock,” Sisodia had said.
