NEW DELHI: A clash allegedly broke out between two groups of students at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Sunday. Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) alleged that following a celebration of Chhatrapati Shivaji Jayanti, those affiliated to left organisations vandalised Teflas, the office of the students’ union. However, the JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) maintained that students were “attacked” by members of ABVP. “Members affiliated to left organisations disrespected the portraits of not only Shivaji but also that of Jyotiba Phule and Maharana Pratap. The moment our event got over, those from left organisations came and vandalised the place. Why are they hell bent on desecrating the legacy of every Bharatiya icon?” ABVP stated.Members of JNUSU, however, said the students’ organisation had organised a march in solidarity with IIT-Bombay student Darshan Solanki who had recently died by suicide. A JNUSU member said, “We had organised a march that ended at Sabarmati hostel around 9 pm. It was then that we got to know that there was some issue at Teflas. The ‘100 flowers’ group had scheduled a movie screening at Teflas. It was before their programme that the events took place.” The member added, “At least two students were attacked by ABVP. All this unfolded in front of Delhi Police personnel and JNU security guards.” The students’ union said in a statement, “ABVP has once again resorted to attacking students in Teflas. Darshan Solanki was institutionally murdered by the casteist environment of IIT-B. ABVP does this again to derail the movement against caste discrimination.”
