NOIDA: Shrikant Tyagi, accused of molesting a woman after an argument over planting trees in the common area of an apartment complex in Sector 93B, wasn’t the only resident to have encroached outside his flat. Most of these are set to be demolished, beginning Friday. A survey by Noida Authority officials earlier in the week had found that most of the 132 families that live in ground floor flats – like that of Shrikant – had erected structures or covered common areas of the society with trees and plants. They were given time till Friday to remove these illegal extensions on their own, after which action was to be taken, additional CEO of the Noida Authority Praveen Mishra had said. Till Thursday, few had taken off the illegal structures, officials said. “Six officials of the Authority and the police had carried out the survey. They had apprised the owners about these encroachments, if any, and clarified their concerns,” an official who was a member of the survey team told TOI on Thursday. The survey was limited to ground floor flats in the 22-tower society, he said, adding that the upper storeys may be checked later. According to the Noida Authority chief architect and town planner Ishtiyaq Ahmed, residents of the society had encroached after the occupation certificates were issued. Before this, in 2019, the Noida Authority had sent notices to 100 residents of the society for illegal construction. The latest survey indicates the overall figures may be far higher now. ACEO Mishra said, “The residents have been informed about encroachments done by them. The authority will not allow any type of encroachment by anyone, and the action will begin from Friday.” The issue came to light after the Shrikant Tyagi controversy erupted in early August. Shrikant had pushed and abused a fellow resident after she objected to the planting of palm trees by him and his aides in the common area of the complex. He was arrested, and extensions from his flat were demolished with bulldozers days later. This week, the matter was ignited again after Shrikant’s wife and other relatives replanted the trees in the same area. Shrikant’s family has demanded that the Authority should take action against all encroachments, prompting officials to give the 48-hour ultimatum to all residents in the apartment complex.
