NEW DELHI: Delhi Police Special Cell has arrested two men who had allegedly spray-painted pro-Khalistan graffiti on walls in west Delhi ahead of Republic Day. Both the accused are drivers for a prominent hotel in Aerocity and were allegedly acting on the instructions of Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, co-founder of the banned outfit Sikhs for Justice. According to special commissioner HGS Dhaliwal, the accused – Vikram Singh from Tilak Nagar and Balram Singh from Rajasthan – were promised Rs 2 lakh but were paid only Rs 2,000. “They were arrested by a team led by ACP Lalit Mohan Negi and others after analysis of footage from dozens of CCTV cameras and technical surveillance,” Dhaliwal added.Cops were taken by surprise just a week before Republic Day when multiple pro-Khalistani graffiti were found sprayed in Vikaspuri, Janakpuri, Paschim Vihar, Peeragarhi, Meera Bagh and adjoining parts of Western Delhi. ‘Punjab Banega Khalistan’, ‘Referendum 2020’, ‘Vote for Khalistan’, etc, were drawn in English and Punjabi. The special cell had filed an FIR. Hundreds of hours of CCTV footage were analysed and the suspects were seen riding a bike that had its number plate covered. Tracking the bike and its riders, police detained them on Sunday. A bike, six spray paint cans, mobile phones, and clothes, shoes and jackets worn on the day of the incident have been recovered by police. The accused have revealed that they painted the graffiti on the intervening night of January 18-19, and recorded the act and sent the videos to senior cadres of Sikh For Justice based abroad. Proscribed terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun then broadcast it through YouTube, claiming responsibility for the act, and threatened an attack. Vikram had been in touch with an SFJ cadre in the US for some months.
