NEW DELHI: Amid chaos and fist fights the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) House saw 14 adjournments within a space of over 14 hours. Clashes erupted between councillors of AAP and BJP, who even threw bottles and slippers at each other, during the process of electing Standing Committee members.The uproar began when newly elected mayor Shelly Oberoi declared that mobile phones would be allowed in the polling booth. There was an immediate protest from the BJP members, who rushed to the well of the house and said it was against the norms to allow mobile phones in this manner.The acrimonious proceedings led to a series of adjournments — at 6.34pm, 7.57pm, 8.10pm, 8.50pm, 10pm, 10.30pm, 11.02pm, 11.20pm, 11.40pm on Wednesday, and at 1.51am, 3.50am, 5.09am, 6.12am, 8.28am on Thursday.With the election of the mayor and deputy mayor completed around 4.20pm, the house took a break and reconvened at 6.10pm. Over the next hour, BJP and AAP councillors exchanged words over the mayor allowing mobile phones inside the voting booth. The BJP members alleged that the AAP councillors were taking photos of the ballot papers to ensure there was no cross-voting.
