The Bengal government on Thursday ordered all state employees to report for work on Friday, saying all unauthorised absences — even a casual leave — would invite salary deductions, a break-in-service and even a show-cause. The move comes after a section of government employees threatened to strike on Friday in protest against the state’s nonpayment of enhanced dearness allowance (DA), on a par with central government rates. Only hospitalisations, family bereavement, severe illnesses and absences continuing prior to March 9, or employees already on child care leave, maternity leave, medical leave and earned leave sanctioned prior to March 9 would be considered valid reasons for absence, according to the government order.
