NEW DELHI: An official of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and his wife allegedly killed themselves in their home in south Delhi’s Defence Colony on Thursday. According to police, the couple often had quarrels and this could be the reason for the double suicide.Ajay Pal Singh, 37, and Monika, 32, were residents of Hudco Place. Singh worked as an operations manager at DGCA, while Monica, an MSc degree holder, was reported by her family to be preparing for competitive exams. According to Chandan Chowdhary, DCP (South), the neighbours told police that Singh had taken his own life earlier that night by consuming pesticide. Monica took him to the hospital, where he was declared dead. Shocked by the death of her husband, Monica returned home and drank pesticide from the same bottle from which her husband had taken the toxic compound.Police received a call at 2.49am on Thursday about the deaths. “The phone call was made by Ashish Tiwari, who claims to be a friend of the husband. We found the house locked from inside,” a police officer said. Inside, they found Monika on the floor with froth coming out of her mouth. She was taken to hospital where doctors declared her dead. When the cops asked neighbours why the couple could have taken the extreme step, they said that there were frequent quarrels between them and this could have been the reason for the double suicide.Police were able to establish after inquiry that when Monika found her husband unconscious, she called her father, a doctor. She showed him the pesticide bottle too. “She and some neighbours took Singh to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Monika rushed home and herself consumed the pesticide,” said DCP Chowdhary. “She had informed several people about her husband’s condition and one of them called police. At the hospital, we found she had mentioned only her husband’s name in documents, not the home address.”Cops suspect that there was an argument between the husband and wife beforeSingh killed himself. “We came to know that in the past few days there were regular quarrels between them about cooking, eating and household chores,” a police officer said.Relatives said the couple married last November after meeting on a matchmaking site. Monika’s family is from Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, while Singh’s home state was Chhattisgarh. The woman’s elder brother, Saurav, said that he had spoken to his sister on Wednesday and noticed nothing amiss. “We didn’t know of any disputes between the couple. They had recently visited Rishikesh,” he said.Singh’s brother, Yogender Pal, said he too had talked on the phone with his brother on Wednesday. He claimed his brother complained about the frequent quarrels with his wife on minor issues related to domestic work. “I told him to come home to Chhattisgarh for Holi. The entire family was gathering for the festival and the couple could speak about their problems. I never thought he would take such an extreme step,” Yogender Pal said.
