NEW DELHI: Not even in her distant dreams had Shobha Devi, a native of Chatra village in Jharkhand, imagined that she would be spending close to Rs 25,000 on a visit to the national capital. The 30-year-old has had to do just that — borrowing money from all possible sources in the process. But this isn’t a pleasure trip, but for the gravest of reasons. Her husband, Vikash Thakur, is fighting for his life at an intensive care unit of AIIMS Trauma Centre, after being mercilessly beaten with a cricket bat by a physical education teacher, apparently because he demanded Rs 60 as parking charges. The incident took place on February 1 at Basant Lok’s Priya Complex Market. “Doctors say my husband is very critical. Apart from head and back, he has received stitches in the ears and his eyes are also affected. It would take close to two years for him to recover. His back is so badly injured that he can’t walk for at least a year,” she said, unable to hold back tears as she wondered how the family would cope as Thakur was their sole breadwinner.Devi asked how anyone could thrash a poor man so badly that he couldn’t even walk. “My husband was doing his duty. There is no hope left for me. I left my three children with my relatives in Chatra. I don’t know how they will survive there. My house is crumbling,” she said. When she first went to meet her husband in the ICU, Devi said, she found his entire body covered with bandages. “My world has come crashing. I love my husband very much. I have no one apart from him and my children,” she said.According to doctors, the patient was admitted at AIIMS Trauma Centre with severe head injuries. Blood clots were found on both sides of his brain. He was operated upon and shifted to ICU neurosurgery. On Sunday morning, the patient got restless and was gasping for breath and again put on ventilator, a doctor said. “The patient is vitally stable without any inotropic support, but his haemoglobin had dropped to five and he requires blood transfusion,” he added.According to family members, Thakur had planned to visit his village in March. “The children used to tell their mother that they wanted to go to the fair with their father,” a relative recalled. Devi said they lived in a house made of mud and had huge loans to repay. “I came to Delhi after taking another loan of Rs 25,000 for my husband’s treatment, but most of the money has been spent on travel and food,” she rued. Meanwhile, a video of the incident has surfaced wherein the accused can be seen walking with the bat after attacking Thakur. Police were alerted at 10.30pm on February 1 by the control room and the team found Thakur unconscious at the market, unfit for testimony. An eyewitness claimed that Thakur was hit with the cricket bat on his head and other parts of his body by the accused, Vikram Jeet Singh, 28, more than a dozen times.
