GURUGRAM: The health department officials on Sunday conducted a raid at a house in Delhi and nabbed three people for illegal sex determination. The department sent a decoy pregnant women to the centre, where a group of three people asked for money from her for determination of sex of the foetus. A case has been registered against the doctor and three other persons under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act, 1994; Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971 in Palam Vihar. an official said. “The team took a decoy pregnant woman who was contacted by the accused. The woman was asked to pay Rs 40,000 for the process after which the Gurgaon health department team followed the decoy patient till Delhi where they informed the local police and nabbed three people, recovered a portable ultrasound machine,” said Dr Virender Yadav, chief medical officer, Gurgaon. According to an official, a quack conducted the sex determination test with the help of an ultrasound machine at a house in Gokulpuri in Delhi. The people involved in the racket did not have any medical degree. They told the decoy that the foetus is a girl after which the decoy signalled the team to capture the quack. “It was an inter-state racket. We will be conducting multiple raids to curb such practices. We conducted several raids in Gurugram, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh as the issue is not only related to the district,” Yadav added. The team has conducted 14 raids this year so far and has arrested more than 18 people. The investigations in several other cases are still going on.cfr
