GURUGRAM: A month after Nuh DSP Surender Singh was run over by a dumper carrying illegally mined stones in the Aravalis, two mining department officials on an inspection were thrashed when they tried to stop two tractors transporting soil in Sehjawas village of Sohna on Friday. None of the officials had any serious injury but the assault underlined the stiff challenge that law enforcement officials face in trying to stop illegal stone mining, which is ravaging the eco-sensitive Aravalis and was banned by the Supreme Court in three Haryana districts – Gurugram , Faridabad and Nuh – in 2009. Police said three persons attacked the two officials and fled. The assault came a day after the Haryana government constituted a single-member commission of inquiry, headed by a retired high court judge, to probe the killing of DSP Singh in Pachgaon village on July 19. The DSP had just intercepted the dumper when the driver pressed the accelerator and mowed Singh down. So far, 12 people, including the dumper driver, have been arrested in connection with the case. On Friday, a team from the mining department, led by inspectors Narendra Pal and Kesha Kumar, went inside the Aravalis in Sehjawas village and spotted the two tractors with illegally mined soil. When one of them tried to stop a tractor, its driver allegedly told him that the vehicles were owned by a person named Vijay of Abhaypur village. As the officials interacted with the drivers to get more details, three people reached the spot and confronted the team. “The accused soon picked up an argument with the officials and it led to a scuffle. The accused eventually managed to flee with the tractors,” said police spokesperson Subhash Boken. Following a complaint by the mining inspectors, a case was registered at Bhondsi police station under sections 186 (obstruction of any public servant in the discharge of his public functions) and 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) of the IPC and relevant provisions of the Mining Act. Haryana Police had in November 2019 constituted a special enforcement team to crack down on illegal mining in the Aravalis. The state was divided into two zones and two police officials were given the charge of each.
