An 85-year-old woman suffocated to death while her husband and daughter were rescued after a fire broke out in their apartment on the ninth floor of a society in Gurgaon in the early hours of Thursday, fire department officials said, adding that a short circuit is suspected to be the cause of the fire.
According to fire department officials, a call was received regarding a fire in an apartment at Essel Towers on MG Road around 3.30 am, following which four fire tenders from Sector 29 fire station were rushed to the spot.
Gulshan Kalra, deputy director (technical) Haryana Fire Services, said, “The fire was controlled in over an hour. Three people were rescued from the house. A woman, who took shelter in the washroom to escape the excessive smoke, was found unconscious inside. She was rushed to a hospital, where she died.”
Police said the deceased has been identified as Pushpa Gupta (85). She along with her husband, Amarnath Gupta (92), daughter Vinay Kumari Gupta and driver Kailash were asleep in the house at the time of the incident.
A fire department officer said, “The fire is suspected to have been caused by a short circuit in LED lights. As the fire spread and smoke engulfed the house, three occupants went towards the balcony while the victim rushed to the bathroom, which had two doors. Meanwhile, the security guards informed the police and fire department and rescue efforts were initiated after teams reached the spot. Three people were rescued from the balcony. While firefighting was going on, we were informed that a woman is still trapped inside. Fire fighters rushed inside to check. The outward door of the bathroom was stuck, it was pushed open and she was found unconscious.”
Police said the victim was declared dead at a hospital. “Prima facie, it appears that she died of suffocation. The body was handed over to the family after the post-mortem. The rescued persons are in a stable condition,” said a police officer.
