NEW DELHI: The weather department has issued a warning over likelihood of dense fog in Delhi-NCR and neighbouring states over the next four days, cautioning people about difficult driving conditions during this period, coinciding with Christmas holidays, and likely disruptions to rail and air traffic.As per India Meteorological Department, dense to very dense fog is likely to continue over northwest India, particularly Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and UP, and adjoining eastern India till Saturday. For the subsequent three days, dense fog is expected to continue in parts of the region. Meanwhile, on Friday, the city recorded moderate fog with minimum visibility of 200 metres at Palam and 500 metres at Safdarjung at 5.30am. By 8.30am, visibility at both Palam and Safdarjung was at 200 metres. On Thursday as well, visibility had dropped to 200 metres during the peak fog hours.Cold, high moisture keep visibility lowIssuing a fog warning for many parts of north India over the next four days, the weather department said a dip in mercury and high moisture were keeping visibility low over the region.Several trains were delayed in the city while two flights bound for Chandigarh were diverted to Delhi.”Due to persistence of high moisture and light winds at lower tropospheric levels over Indo-Gangetic plains, dense to very dense fog in many or most pockets very likely to continue over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Uttar Pradesh in night and morning time during the next 48 hours. Thereafter, dense fog in isolated pockets very likely over Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh for the subsequent three days… Dense fog in isolated pockets also very likely over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, north-Rajasthan, Bihar, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim and Tripura in night/morning hours during next 2-3 days,” stated IMD.For Delhi, the weather department expects moderate fog on Saturday and Sunday, and dense fog on Monday morning. “Be careful while driving or outing through any transport. Use fog lights during driving. Be in touch with airlines and Railway and state transport for schedule of your journey,” stated the IMD bulletin. tnn
