NEW DELHI: Delhi Police has arrested a 25-year-old woman for allegedly kidnapping an infant in Amar Colony area. Police said the woman planned to sacrifice the baby boy following the belief that it would revive her dead father. The arrested woman has been identified as Sweta, a resident of Kotla Mubarakpur. She has been previously involved in two criminal cases of robbery and burglary, police said. According to police, around 4pm on Thursday information was received at Amar Colony police station that a two-month-old boy had been kidnapped by a woman from Garhi area. DCP (southeast) Esha Pandey said during enquiry the boy’s mother said the woman who kidnapped him had met them at Safdarjung Hospital and introduced herself as a member of an NGO working for a childcare centre. “She promised to provide free medicine and consultation to the mother and the child. Later, on the pretext of examining the newborn, she visited the parents’ house on Wednesday. On Friday, she visited the house again. After gaining the trust of the family, she asked for the mother’s permission to take the baby for an outing,” the DCP said. Pandey said, the mother then asked her 21-year-old niece, Ritu, to accompany the lady and her baby. “The woman took them in her car. On their way, she offered Ritu a cold drink and she fell unconscious. Later, the kidnapper dumped Ritu in Ghaziabad and fled. After gaining consciousness, Ritu informed her family that the child had been kidnapped,” the officer said. During investigation, CCTV footage of the vicinity was checked and the registration number of the kidnapper’s vehicle was traced. “Meanwhile, our team received information that the suspect would come near Arya Samaj Mandir, Kotla Mubarakpur. A raid was conducted. The woman was arrested, and the infant was recovered from her,” the officer added. Pandey said that during questioning the woman said her father had died last month, and she had heard that if she would sacrifice the life of a baby boy, she would be able to revive him.
