NEW DELHI: The city saw its warmest day of the year on Wednesday, but the weather department expects respite from Thursday onwards because of the possibility of light to very light rain and clouds. On Wednesday, the maximum temperature at the city’s base station in Safdarjung was recorded at 34.3 degrees Celsius, five notches above normal and highest of the year so far, against 33.3 degrees Celsius a day earlier. Earlier, the maximum temperature of 34.1 degree Celsius on Sunday was the warmest this year. The highest maximum temperature at the Ridge, Najafgarh and Pitampura area was recorded at 35.4 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature, however, dropped by a degree on Wednesday to 16.3 degreess Celsius.”By May-end, the maximum temperature is often around 45 degrees Celsius even. So, the daytime temperature will only rise. Though incidents like rain may control it for a short span,” said Kuldeep Srivastava, a senior weather scientist with the India Meteorological Department (IMD).Weather analysts said a western disturbance active over the Himalayan region is likely to impact northwest India over the next week. The IMD has forecast rain, drizzle and thundershowers over next five to six days. “There is a possibility of isolated rain on Thursday. It will continue for some days under the impact of the western disturbance. The rainfall intensity may increase on March 17 and the daytime temperature may drop. The temperature will not rise further from March 17 onwards. However, after the passage of western disturbance, the temperature will rise,” Srivastava said.According to the IMD, the maximum and minimum temperatures on Thursday may increase to 33 degrees and 18 degrees Celsius, respectively.
