NEW DELHI: With the deadline for accepting the allocations made to undergraduate aspirants at Delhi University by the Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS) closing on Saturday, 72, 865 students of the 80,164 allotted to colleges and programmes confirmed they would take admission. Colleges have time till Sunday to verify and approve the admissions while the candidates have to pay the online admission fee by 5pm on Monday. Indraprastha College principal Rekha Sethi said the system had functioned very well. “Every year, admission was a difficult and cumbersome process. But this time, the university took a revolutionary step. The admission process is an indicator of the kind of future changes in the education sector we are looking at.” Several colleges pointed out that many applications had to be rejected due to incorrect mapping by students or wrong certificates uploaded by them. Tanvir Aeijaz, an admission convenor at Ramjas College, explained, “Some students have made silly mistakes. There have been cases where despite studying a particular subject and even appearing for it in CUET, they didn’t mention it in the correct section. This resulted in huge differences to their percentiles.” Referring to complaints about problems with caste certificates uploaded by candidates, DU said that such candidates would be considered in the unreserved category subject to availability of seats. Having advised students to ensure that their required documents and certificates were in the prescribed format when applying on the university portal, Vikas Gupta, DU registrar, said, “Due to non-availability of the category certificate, the seat allocation has been rejected in CSAS first round in respect of such candidates. All such candidates will be considered in the unreserved category in CSAS second round subject to availability of seats in the unreserved category and subject to their meeting the unreserved category merit.” Ramjas College had cleared around 1,700 admission from among the 1,877 students who accepted. Of them, 650 students had completed the fee payment process. At Sri Venkateswara College, of the 1,669 allocations, the college had approved 1,499 for admission and 770 had paid the admission fees. Ramanujan College, meanwhile, saw 1,115 approved admissions by Saturday, said principal SP Aggarwal. Many of the top colleges are likely to close admissions after the first round itself, several principals disclosed. Indraprastha principal Sethi said, “We have approved more than 1,450 applications. Some are now pending and we have sent some queries to the applicants. By 3pm on Saturday, over 500 aspirants had paid their admission fees. We are likely to close entry for most of our courses after the first round. However, a few seats are likely to be vacant in the ST and EWS categories where we do not have enough applications for some courses.”
