NEW DELHI: Turning down their plea to be put in a prison outside the capital, the Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered the shifting of ‘conman’ Sukesh Chandrashekhar and his wife, who were allegedly running an extortion racket from inside Tihar jail, to the Mandoli jail in Delhi. A bench of Justices S Ravindra Bhat and Sudhanshu Dhulia passed the order on the Enforcement Directorate’s opposition to their plea. The agency told the court that the couple wanted to go to a jail outside Delhi as their modus operandi in Tihar had been exposed and they wanted to restart their extortion racket from another jail outside the national capital. The conman and his wife, however, denied this allegation and said they were facing threat to their life in Tihar and that’s why they wanted to be shifted to another jail. Noting that the petitioners had sought to be transferred to any other jail, the bench directed that the couple be shifted to Mandoli jail which was suggested by the ED. Additional solicitor general S V Raju, appearing for the agency, told the bench that Chandrashekhar had paid jail officials to get facilities for his illegal operation from inside the prison and more than 80 jail officials were helping him. Senior advocate R Basant, appearing for the couple, said his client had paid the money but it was not a bribe. He said Chandrashekhar was forced to pay the jail officials as he was facing threat to his life and was being tortured inside jail. FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIAFacebookTwitterInstagramKOO APPYOUTUBE
