NEW DELHI: Six straight days of rain, including nearly three days of non-stop showers, have already made this month the wettest October in the capital in 66 years and the fourth wettest in records going back to 1901. The city’s base station, Safdarjung, has so far logged 128.2mm rainfall, the highest since 1956, when 236.2mm of rain was reported in October. The rainiest October on record at Safdarjung was in 1954, when the station logged 238.2mm while 1910 saw the third wettest October with 185.9mm of rain. The wet spell abated considerably on Tuesday, with light rain reported in some parts. The met department expects similar weather on Wednesday, after which the current spell is likely to end. According to the weather department, the unusually intense and prolonged wet spell was caused by a confluence of two meteorological activity. The six-day spell that has made this October the wettest in the capital since 1956 was caused by an interaction of two weather events – a cyclonic circulation moving in from the Bay of Bengal via the Andhra coast and a western disturbance that brought moisture into the region from the Arabian Sea. Safdarjung recorded 6.5mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours till Tuesday morning (8.30am), while an additional 0.6mm was logged till 8.30pm, Tuesday. This took the cumulative rainfall in the month so far to 128.2mm (against a normal of 15.1mm), surpassing October 2021’s total of 122.5mm. Several parts of the city and NCR received very light to light rain till Tuesday noon. “The rain intensity will drop further, and Wednesday may see negligible rain. For the next 10 days, weather conditions are not favourable for rain,” said R K Jenamani, senior weather scientist, IMD. Mayur Vihar was the wettest spot in the city on Tuesday, having recorded 11.5mm of rainfall in 12 hours from 8.30am on Tuesday, followed by Pitampura (3mm) and Sports Complex at Akshardham (2mm). Meanwhile, the maximum temperature saw a sudden spike of nearly eight degrees since Monday. The weather department expects temperatures to be between 20 and 31 degrees Celsius on Wednesday.
