NEW DELHI: To control dust pollution during winter, the Public Works Department has started working on its action plan. “We have held meetings with other agencies over how to coordinate to keep pollution in check. Tenders have been floated for hiring smog guns, water sprinklers and mechanical sweepers,” said a PWD official. According to the action plan, 150 stationary smog guns will be installed at various construction sites and other locations in the city to settle dust. In addition to this, 150 truck-mounted water sprinklers will be hired to settle dust on the roads. In the past, the government was irate at anti-dust norms not being followed at construction sites by the contractors. It was made mandatory for all construction sites of 20,000 square metres or above to use anti-smog guns and ensure minimum dust pollution. An anti-smog gun equipped with a tank is mounted on a vehicle and can spray water up to a height of 50 metres to settle dust particles and PM 2.5. Lieutenant governor VK Saxena had directed for installing water sprinklers on highrises this winter season to bring down pollution. “As a pilot project, we have installed three water sprinklers on highrises at ITO, MSO building, trade and taxes building and Vikas Bhawan-2 in Civil Lines. We are identifying two more locations for the purpose,” said the PWD official. Last year, environment minister Gopal Rai had announced that under government’s Summer Action Plan to fight pollution, a special focus would be given to anti-dust road campaign.
