NEW DELHI: The crime branch of Delhi Police has busted a gang of ‘sextortionists’ and arrested five suspects who extorted money from people after recording them indulging in sexually explicit video chats.The arrested men have been identified as Khurshid Khan, Raman, Murari, Kaluram and Vikram Jatav. The gang had extorted Rs 2.7 crore from a Gujarat-based businessman and Rs 5.8 lakh from another Delhi-based businessman.Special commissioner (crime) Ravindra Yadav said that after recording the target during a WhatsApp call, they contacted him posing as the woman’s kin. “They then claimed the woman had committed suicide as the video had been uploaded on YouTube and threatened legal action. An accomplice then raided them posing as a police officer,” he added.The crime branch started probing the case after the Delhi-based businessman lodged a complaint. The victim received a video call from a girl on WhatsApp and she undressed herself while also asking the complainant to take off his clothes.”Thereafter, the complainant received a phone call from a person, who posed himself as inspector Vikram Rathore from the crime branch and extorted money on the pretext of blocking the obscene video on social media. The victim was also told by the accused persons that the matter had become complicated as the girl had killed herself resulting in an murder FIR against him,” he said.The victim gave around Rs 5.8 lakh to the gang but approached cops when the demand didn’t stop.Tracking the accused’s whereabouts, a team of head constables Mohit, Gaurav and Akshay analysed details of more than 50 mobile numbers, transactions in 10 bank accounts and examined CCTV footage of over 50 ATMs. It was established that the gang was operating from Mewat and Bharatpur. The team went there and spent over 10 days to identify the accused persons, who used to withdraw the cash from different ATMs in the area. Finally, the suspects were arrested during raids.
