Delhi clocked a spike in dengue cases Monday, taking the total number of cases detected over the past seven days to 129. According to the data shared by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, 525 cases have been reported so far this season, the highest in the last four years.
With the surge in numbers, the MCD said it has also started fogging across the city.
According to a civic official, despite the rising numbers, the national capital has not recorded any fatalities from the disease so far this year.
“Around 90 per cent of the cases have been of mild nature,” the official said.
Of the 129 cases reported over the last seven days, 36 remained untraced after investigation. As per the data shared by the corporation, apart from the 129 cases, 98 people acquired the infection from other states, and 284 people could not be traced as their addresses were not provided by the hospitals.
According to Dr B L Sherwal, Medical Superintendent of Safdarjung Hospital, dengue cases are expected to increase in the coming days.
“Due to the late rainfall and the weather being ideal, pockets of water will act as a breeding ground for mosquitos,” he said.
This year, 525 cases have been reported so far, of which 230 remained untraced after investigation.
The numbers have increased significantly as compared to the last three years when not more than 300 cases were reported till September 21. However, the numbers were on the higher side in 2017 and 2018 when 1,807 and 481 cases were recorded respectively till September 21.
Meanwhile, apart from the 525 cases reported, 325 were acquired from other states and in 579 cases addresses were not provided by the hospital.
The highest number of dengue cases were reported in Keshav Puram. MCD officials said the civic body has been sending domestic breeding checkers (DBCs) to every household and more than 3,000 DBCs have been deployed under the programme.
According to the data, 106 cases of malaria and 20 cases of chikungunya have also been reported this year in the national capital.
The data further said that 4,567 legal notices were issued this week for mosquito genetic conditions, and 91,462 notices have been issued since the beginning of this year.
The corporation visited 2,52,89,789 houses for checking domestic breeding this year, out of which 12,1762 were found positive.
In the last week, 9,05,078 houses were visited, of which 8,004 were found positive for domestic breeding of mosquitoes.
On Saturday, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal chaired a meeting with health officials, wherein he chalked out an action plan for checking the spread of dengue – including setting up 35 dedicated hospitals, case-based monitoring, larval source management, fogging, and spreading awareness by providing special homework to schoolchildren.
