NEW DELHI: In the past 19 days, special police teams raided different places across Delhi and seized about 13,000 kg of firecrackers and registered 75 cases. Six cases were registered against those found bursting crackers. An officer said they have been holding meetings in different areas to ensure that no firecrackers are sold or burst. “Awareness is the key. We have roped in volunteers from markets’ welfare associations, residents’ welfare associations and traders’ associations for creating awareness among people about the harmful effects of crackers,” the officer added. In the past two days, cops have seized over 4,000kg of firecrackers. While some of the accused had brought crackers from other states, a few had stored crackers last year itself, police said. A 22-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday with 570kg of banned firecrackers in northwest Delhi’s Kanhaiya Nagar. Three more people were arrested from southeast Delhi with 640.8 kg firecrackers. A 65-year-old man, Dinesh Chand, was arrested with 250kg of firecrackers in south Delhi’s Madangir. The state government announced on Wednesday that anybody bursting firecrackers in Delhi till January 1 could be fined Rs 200 and jailed for up to six months. “Considering the complete ban on firecrackers, a special combing operation has been started in Delhi against sale, purchase and usage of firecrackers,” an official said.
