NEW DELHI: The family of Jullu Dafadar, a ragpicker who was shot dead in southeast Delhi’s Pul Prahladpur on Monday during a snatching bid on a businessman, has donated his eyes.Jullu’s relatives and friends were present at the AIIMS Trauma Centre where the post-mortem was conducted. His grief-stricken brother Adam told TOI that when doctors asked him whether he wanted to donate his younger sibling’s eyes, he gave his consent without wasting any time. The family, he said, wanted a needy person to live through his brother’s eyes.“If he can be of help to anyone after his death, we are more than willing to take the step. His eyes will remove darkness from someone else’s life,” Adam said.A native of Nadia in West Bengal, Jullu lived in a shanty in Bengali Colony in Tughlaqabad village. He was the sole breadwinner for a family of five, including his wife, their three children — two daughters aged 16 and 10 and a son aged 11 — and his 65-year-old mother.Sansar Aali Dafadar, one of his relatives, said Jullu went ragpicking with another family member around 6.30am Monday. “But he couldn’t find him after 12pm. So, he went home and told the family Jullu was missing,” Sansar said.Adam said he, along with his neighbours and family members, began searching for Jullu and reached Rampyari camp, where the incident took place. “Some people informed me a ragpicker had been shot and told me to go to the police station, where cops showed me a photograph of Jullu’s body,” he said.Sansar said Jullu had been feeding his family by picking up scraps and selling them for more than 10 years.“He wanted to come to Delhi after the lockdown and took a loan of Rs 4,000. He had repaid Rs 2,000 and was working hard to clear the remaining debt. Despite being poor, he used to send his children to school,” Sansar said.Jullu had also hoped to build a small house for his family, but the plans were dashed, Sansar said, adding, “I don’t know whether his children will be able to continue their education.”Late on Tuesday evening, Jullu’s friends, family members and neighbours arranged money to take his body to his native place in West Bengal. The incident took place on a busy street near Pul Prahladpur late on Monday morning. A dairy businessman told the police that he was going to deposit money in a bank at Eros Garden in Faridabad and had arrived at Rampyari Camp around 11am when two people tried to stop his scooty by waving him down. When he did not stop, one of the men pulled out a pistol. On seeing this, the businessman accelerated. The accused fired a shot at him but the bullet hit Jullu instead, who was picking rags near the spot.Meanwhile, police have apprehended a suspect and are probing his role.
