NEW DELHI: Union home minister Amit Shah said on Thursday that all Indians living in Delhi could now get their passport verified in five days. While inaugurating the online facility for passport verification, Shah asserted that people won’t need to wait for 15 days for police verification. In his address during the 76th Raising Day Parade of Delhi Police, Shah revealed that the facility of passport verification through mobile tablets had also started. “On average, 2,000 applications for passports are received daily and now their online processing will reduce the problems faced by people as it will be done online in five days instead of 15 days,” he added.Shah also said 2023 would be a significant year for Delhi Police and the force would have to be on their toes since the national capital would host various international dignitaries for the G20 Summit.Recalling the role of Delhi Police during Covid-19, Shah said the humane face of Delhi Police was visible during the pandemic that changed its image in the country as well as globally. The home minister also dedicated mobile forensic vehicles inducted in Delhi Police to the people and inaugurated the academic complex of National Forensic Science University’s (NFSU) Delhi campus. While inducting the forensic vans, Shah said Delhi Police would become the first police force in the country to investigate every crime punishable with a term of six years and above through the visit of a forensic team.Shah also stressed on the need to strengthen the judicial system on the basis of forensic science evidence. “Conviction rate will significantly increase when this vehicle, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and 14 different types of forensic kits, will visit the crime scene,” he added while inaugurating the academic complex built over 5,000 square metres for Rs 34 crore. “In the next two years, NFSU will have campuses in every state,” he pointed out.The minister also said that under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi, the central government was going to make radical changes in IPC, CrPC and Evidence Act. Shah said Delhi Police had also started trial of one of the reforms under which the visit by a forensic science team was being made mandatory in every crime punishable with a term of six years and above.Shah spoke on the decline of the “left-wing extremism” in the country. “The lowest figures of left-wing extremism violence have been witnessed in 2022 and it is now confined to the areas under 46 police stations only,” he said while highlighting the decline in terrorist incidents in J&K after the abrogation of Article 370. He spoke about removal of Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) from 60% of the Northeast and said over 8,000 youths had given up arms and joined the mainstream there. The home minister also informed that PM Modi had approved a huge budget to increase the housing satisfaction ratio for Delhi Police and all Central Armed Police Forces. Shah expressed confidence that the government would take their housing satisfaction ratio above 60% before 2024.He also acknowledged Delhi Police’s role in the crackdown against interstate gangs in north India. Shah said that keeping in mind the future challenges, the process of improvement across 20 departments was initiated at Delhi Police Headquarters, out of which very good progress had been made in 16.
