NEW DELHI: To ensure constant supervision for quality health care to critical patients, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has decided that a faculty member will be present 24×7 in all ICUs and emergencies in shifts with effect from December 1. An office memorandum, issued by director Dr M Srinivas, stated that since patient care devices like monitors, ventilators, infusion pumps in emergency and few ICUs of AIIMS are not connected to central charting system, it is impossible for faculty of other departments to provide remote consultation after reviewing the patient’s vitals on real time basis. “All ICUs and emergencies shall have a faculty physically present therein on 24×7 basis in shifts and appropriate post duty off will be given to them,” the memorandum stated, adding that eCasualty and eICU charting solution will also be implemented for all red and yellow area beds in the emergency and ICU beds from April 2023. After availability of digital information, patient care device parameters can be monitored remotely and centrally by faculty members. It will also enable access to historic patient monitoring data which will help in auditing the quality of care being provided to AIIMS emergency and ICUs. Besides, it will also enable evidence based remote video/ tele consultation with other departments. Besides, a facility of e-rounds will also be commissioned in all ICUs to enable live discussion of patients’ condition with his attendants and other members of the clinical team. For this, a tele call centre facility will be commissioned in all ICUs from December 31. The director further stated that it has also been noted that patient’s attendants enter ICUs after visiting hours as there is no facility of video consultation with them. Hence from January 1, 2023, all ICUs will have single entry and exit which will be accessed by facial recognition based system.
