NEW DELHI: Deputy CM Manish Sisodia on Wednesday reached Ghazipur landfill site accusing the BJP-led Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) of hiding its failure in handling waste, which caused a nearby wall to collapse. Sisodia claimed MCD was hastily trying to handle the garbage by spreading it in the nearby vacant land when the wall in the vicinity of a childcare institution having 100 children fell. “Due to the ignorant and careless act of BJP, the wall collapsed. Luckily, the incident occurred at night and no one was harmed. People are fed up with this careless attitude of BJP and will throw them out this time. It’s just a matter of one month now,” said Sisodia. BJP hit back at Sisodia terming his claims as “political tourism” and blamed Delhi government for not providing special funds to clear the landfill site. “It’s regrettable that during the last eight years, the Kejriwal government has not only cut down on the general sanitation fund of MCD, but also not issued special funds meant for clearance of landfill sites. Due to this, these sites have become a huge problem,” said Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor. Sisodia said AAP would come into governance even in MCD and chief minister Arvind Kejriwal had made a plan on eliminating these mountains of garbage. “The CM is an engineer and he has studied solid waste management and prepared a blueprint to eliminate the mountains of garbage,” he added. However, BJP said last month National Green Tribunal had imposed a heavy penalty of Rs 900 crore on the Kejriwal government, holding it responsible for not doing anything administratively or financially for clearing the landfill sites. But Delhi government had still not released the requisite funds to MCD. “All mountains of garbage can be cleared from Delhi, but for that to work honestly is needed. BJP has completely failed in this matter,” said Sisodia. Reacting to Sisodia’s allegations, MCD said a false narrative was doing the rounds that garbage was being spread to nearby vacant lands to portray that the height of the mound had been reduced and this had led to collapse of the wall of Ghazipur Mandi. “The corporation finds the claim unfortunate and rejects it completely. MCD would like to reiterate that it has already disposed of 77 lakh MT of legacy waste from the three landfill sites. The space getting emptied is being replaced by legacy waste from the height above. MCD workers and engineers have been sweating blood to reduce the height and flatten the landfill. It does no good to trifle the good work being done by them,” MCD stated.
