NEW DELHI: Two policemen posted at Delhi airport have been arrested for allegedly stealing gold worth Rs 50 lakh from two passengers, officials said. The accused cops stole it from two UAE-based labourers who were allegedly smuggling the gold into India.The policemen have been suspended and are likely to be dismissed from service, they added. They were posted in the special operations squad of IGI airport. They allegedly threatened the two passengers and “seized” their gold. “An FIR was registered and legal action was initiated against them . The accused cops were produced before the court. Further probe is underway,” a senior official said.ASI runs theft racket, heldIn another incident, an assistant sub-inspector with the CISF was arrested for running a theft racket at the airport in connivance with two loaders at the cargo terminal. They allegedly stole dozens of mobile phones and were selling them to a store in Mahipalpur. The store owner has also been arrested.According to DCP (Airport), Ravi Singh, 17 Samsung Galaxy mobile phones and 10 smartwatches have been recovered from the accused.An FIR was registered on November 21 on the complaint of a firm that 19 cell phones had been stolen. “The phones were stolen by pilfering the consignment from the cargo area of the IGI airport. A team comprising ACP Virender Mor, inspector Yashpal Singh, and SI Naveen was formed to solve the case,” the DCP added.The stolen phones were put on IMEI surveillance and monitored. After a few days, a few mobile phones became active and were traced at a shop in Mahipalpur. The inquiry revealed that the phones had been sold to different customers. The shop owner, Vivek, was apprehended.He disclosed that he purchased five new Samsung Galaxy mobile phones from a CISF official, Brijpal Singh. Singh was arrested. Posted at the airport for seven years, he was due to retire on December 31.
